Fisheries, Farms and Forests:
A local food economy work training and service learning internship
For youth and young adults ages 16-25
Summary
This place-based work readiness program will connect youth directly with our community’s fisheries, farms and forests. Through field trips, instruction and hands-on activities youth will:
· Experience the diversity of Kitsap County’s abundant food resources
· Harvest and glean fresh, healthy, local food
· Acquire food handlers permit
· Serve an internship within the local food system
· Prepare and preserve food for personal/family consumption
· Prepare and preserve food for food banks and/or community dinners
· Establish connections with professionals engaged in related fields
· Learn principals for stewardship of our local food resources
· Earn a stipend upon completion of this program
Program Model
Who: Eight Kitsap County youth (15-19) and two professional leaders
What: A ninety hour compensated work readiness program ($300)
Where: Central Kitsap County’s Fisheries, Forests and Farms
When: TBD
Why: Learn about work, volunteer and entrepreneurial opportunities in the local food economy
Budget
This project requires about $6,000 to cover cash expenses. We will also rely on the in-kind contributions of numerous volunteers and community partners. To date, over $3,000 of in-kind support has been committed, including stipends for several youth and meeting space.
